Hanoi β The Communist Party of Vietnam Appointing Mr. Vo Van Thuong as the new president of the country, Two party sources told Reuters on Wednesday.
The party’s Central Committee confirmed an earlier decision by Vietnam’s highest decision-making body, Politburo, to nominate Thuong.
The decision requires the approval of the National Assembly, which is due to hold an extraordinary session on Thursday.
Thuong, now 52, ββis the youngest member of the Politburo.
His appointment came during an anti-corruption campaign called “Burning Furnace”. The campaign investigated hundreds of officials and dismissed many politicians, including two deputy prime ministers.
Thuong is seen as close to Vietnam’s most powerful figure and a key architect of the anti-transplant campaign, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
In Vietnam, the president is one of the country’s top four politicians, along with the party general secretary, prime minister, and speaker of the National Assembly.
January, then President Nguyen Xuan Phuc abruptly resigns After the ruling Communist Party accused him of “violations and misconduct” by officials under his control.
The current acting president is Vo Thi An Xuan, who was vice president when Phuc stepped down.Reuters
