MADRID: Three people were killed and two wounded after armed police intervened in a shootout that sparked an altercation between a man and his father in central Spain on Wednesday (26 October), police said.
A police spokesperson told Reuters news agency that the gunman was killed in a house on the road between the villages of Argamacilla de Calatrava and Villamayor de Calatrava, near Ciudad Real, about 230 kilometers south of Madrid. , a neighbor, said a police officer had been shot dead.
The case stemmed from a domestic dispute between the 50-year-old shooter and his 81-year-old father.
A special operations team from Ciudad Real was called in and shot the gunman.
Another officer was shot in the leg and a third officer suffered an unspecified gunshot wound and was taken to hospital. Police say his father escaped with bruises.
Crime, especially gun violence, is fairly rare in Spain. According to the government, the country’s crime rate has fallen by 11% from 2019 to 2021.
