LONDON – London police said on Thursday that one person had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after a car crashed into the main gate of Downing Street, home to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office and residence.

“At approximately 4:20 p.m., a vehicle crashed into the gates of Downing Street in Whitehall. Armed police arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of bodily injury and dangerous driving,” police said in a statement. “There are no reports of injuries.”

Police said an investigation was ongoing.

Witnesses to Reuters said a small vehicle with open doors and trunk was outside the gate.

BBC television footage showed the vehicle approaching the gate at low speed.

Sunak’s office declined to comment.

Police initially set up a cordon blocking traffic along Whitehall, the main road through Downing Street, where several government departments are based.

The current terrorist threat level in the UK is ‘substantial’, meaning an attack is considered highly probable.Reuters
