How to Prevent Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are insects in the genus Cimex, which are parasites that affect people. These bugs can get into your bed and end up biting you in your sleep. Once you have a bed bug infestation it can be very difficult to get rid of them. This is why it is recommended that you take steps to prevent a bed bug problem rather than try to treat the problem.

Inspect Often for Any Signs of Infestation

It is important to be vigilant and aware that infestations with bed bugs can happen. You should change your sheets and pillowcases often and inspect your mattress for any signs of bedbugs or other insect pests.

Possible signs you may notice if you have bedbugs include the following:

  • A different smell in the room than you are used to.
  • Small brown spots that look like grains of pepper on the bed.
  • Several itchy bites on your body.
  • Seeing an actual bug or its shed skin on your bed or mattress.

Check Luggage After Returning From a Trip

People often pick up bedbugs after staying at a hotel while on holiday. Check your luggage carefully when you return and wash clothing well and use a drier. If you do not own a washer and drier it is best to take to a commercial laundromat where they use a clothing drier. It is the heat of drying that kills off the bed bugs more than the washing.

Be Careful Buying Used Furniture

It is possible to bring bed bugs into your home on used furniture. Mattresses are risky and may be infested with bed bugs or even contain cockroaches. It is best to avoid buying cheap second-hand mattresses and other bedding materials.

Avoid Clutter and Use Proper Storage

Do not let clutter accumulate in your home. This makes itlikely that pest insects will invade and be difficult to detect. Clothing or linens on the floor can easily become infected when a bed bug crawls onto the fabric and latches on. This can mean you infect your entire clothes closet when you do eventually pack your clothes or linens away.

Proper storage of clothing and linens is important for the same reason. Place dirty clothes and linens in a separate laundry container. Be conscientious about packing clean clothes away.

Clean Your Room and House often

Besides bed bugs there are other pests that can get into your carpets and furniture. It is important to vacuum carpets often to rid the house of dust, dirt, and potential pests that may be in or on the carpet. Vacuuming also removes house dust mites which can cause allergies, so it is beneficial for a number of reasons.

Wash floors often as well and make sure to also notice if there are any signs of pest damage at the same time.

By being careful and using the tips we have mentioned above you can avoid having to deal with a bed bug problem.
