After a netizen, Serene Ho said the statement was made by Madame Ho Ching, former CEO of Temasek and wife of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Mdm Ho Ching wrote: Put words in someone else’s mouth, right?
On Wednesday (December 14), Serene Ho wrote: So why are we paying property taxes on apartments we don’t own?”
This appears to be a response to Mdm Ho Ching’s Facebook post on December 12th. Buying an HDB apartment with a lump sum is like paying rent for decades without inflationand lower housing costs.
Since then, an exchange of views has taken place between Mdm Ho Ching and netizen Ms Serene Ho.
Mdm Ho Ching went on to write an analogy about HDB flats as a rental scheme, comparing owning such flats to owning an apple and comparing the number of things one can do with an apple.
Among other things, the prime minister’s wife wrote: “Don’t play dumb about land by saying HDB should be free so that buyers can enjoy a bigger windfall than they already have. And don’t make excuses for not paying taxes. Taxes are an obligation for all to fund and support common essential services for the common good. If you don’t pay taxes, you can’t hope for cheap housing or free education. ”
Celine Ho thanked Mdm Ho for commenting on her post, writing, “I didn’t mean to put the words in your mouth at all. I’m sorry if I misunderstood your intentions.
“I just wanted to point out that your suggestion of regarding a flat purchase price as a long-term, prepaid rental is overly simplistic and misleading.
Most people can’t afford this one-time upfront payment and have to pay interest on the loan they take out. Additionally, the “discounted” rent rate they pay only applies if you hold the flat for the entire tenure of the land.
for tPlease dispose of the apartment as soon as possible. “Rent” depends on when the apartment was sold. I’m not suggesting that people don’t pay taxes, but in a real rental situation, you don’t have to pay property taxes, renewal fees and maintenance fees at all,” he added. /TISG
