#HerWorldHerStory: Saranta Gattie builds purpose-driven business and work culture for people to thrive

When my baby was born, I interrupted my career. It was natural for me, and thanks to the support and resources I had, I was fortunate to be able to make a choice.

Kyra Ventures is named after my daughter. It comes from the Greek word “kairos” which means “opportunity”. I founded the company earlier this year and embarked on the next chapter of my career. I stepped away from the working capitol and pursued another passion for me.

As a founder, you have been forced to wear many hats and launching a working capitol has required me to take on various roles. What I especially liked was building our culture – defining our values, designing our organizational system, and guiding our team. With Kaira Ventures, we want to help other founders design their organizations into purpose-driven businesses and build a genuine culture where people can thrive.

Working Capitol was named one of Asia’s top coworking spaces by Forbes in 2016 and continues to maintain its position in fierce competition. Flexibility, adaptability, and leveraging our strengths were key to our success. In addition to our ability to provide bespoke space and service, design-driven aesthetics have proven to be a winning recipe. Working with shophouses to work on the adaptive reuse of conservation assets is at the core of our work.

Last year, we are committed to supporting the survival, stability and prosperity of our member companies. I decided to prioritize this early on. That meant giving our members a rental relief preemptively, even before seeing anything from the landlord. By the fourth quarter of 2020, we had reached 100% occupancy. This is a great achievement given the current climate. We are currently launching a new site on Keong Saik Road.

Surround yourself with people who are supportive and believe in you.

Starting your own business always involves a series of challenges of its own. When it comes to funding and partnering, it’s important to be clear about your leadership and business objectives and values, and build an ecosystem of partners in line with your vision.

As a female founder, I didn’t have to overcome gender stigma. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by men and women who treat each other with respect, are supportive, and want to see each other succeed. But the prejudices are there, and I believe women need to support each other in order for us to overcome them. I want you to increase your investment in female entrepreneurship.

For women looking to set up their own start-up: Clarify your vision and the impact you want, be surrounded by supportive and believing people and enjoy the process.
