From the depths of the fall / winter 2021 sea, Alexander McQueen flew for the Spring / Summer 2022 womenswear collection. And the show’s staging in London — the brand’s return to the first runway When It was screened in London for the first time in a few years — reflecting the theme. The showspace was conceptualized by architect Smiljan Radic and built on Tobacco Dock Yellow Park in Wapping, East London.
In essence, the runway show was contained within a transparent dome that provided an unobstructed view of everything around it, and most importantly, the sky. East London was a sunny day. For everyone famous for Alexander McQueen, the drama is arguably one of them, with storm clouds running overhead to highlight the various elements of the sky and clouds found in the 2022 Spring / Summer collection. I hoped that.
Creative director Sarah Burton likened Alexander McQueen’s woman this season to a “storm chaser.” In the collection notes, Burton poetically describes the collection as follows: It will happen next. Relinquishing control and coming into direct contact with the unpredictable is part of nature, seeing and feeling it most intensely, and becoming one with a world larger and more powerful than us. If it has nothing to do with our current state, I don’t know.
That’s exactly what we got from the collection. Luxuriously crafted explosive sleeves have now been a significant feature of the brand for several seasons. There was also a constant struggle between soft femininity and edgy sturdiness. What was unexpected in the collection was the overall sense of brightness found in many looks, while maintaining the drama in the form of sculptural silhouettes and couture-level fabrications.
And the cloud-filled sky prints of different shades (sometimes similar to tie-dye prints) were actually taken from the rooftop of Alexander McQueen Studios. What they say is true, beauty is around us. And in the case of Alexander McQueen, you just need to find out.
what: Printed off-shoulder dress with added Godette details collected.
why: Indeed, the exploding sleeves were a clear statement on the runway, but the comfort and tranquility of this dress exudes such awe for the theme at hand. And the print also worked very well with all the collected elements popped in.
what: A pale blue corset dress with a parachute skirt.
why: The sculpture on the skirt is breathtaking. The structure alone was so beautiful and tense that I love it done without any prints or decorations. Stunning.
what: Composed of a parachute sleeve blouse and pegreg pants, this outfit has the best zip detail.
why: This should be a new and reliable update for the typical white shirt and black trouser pairing. There is no doubt about it.
what: Jersey T-shirt dress with cutouts embroidered from top to bottom.
why: It looked extraordinary as I walked down the runway and vividly captured the unplanned rain splatters that hit anything on the course. The degrading effect of this is also very sublime.
what: The reworked black tie jacket has the shoulders and hips cut off and finished with crystal embroidery.
why: The show ended with a slate of looks decorated with crystals, which stood out for its contrast, and especially the worthy decoration of its entire foot. Zendaya, wherever you go next, I hope to kill it with this look sometime next week.
