Introduction, design, and function

ASUS’s trend towards quirky looking routers stays up to date RT-AX89X router.. The similarities with the previous ROG GT-AX11000 router are clear. A router that honors high-end specifications. After all, it’s ASUS’s latest flagship Wi-Fi 6 router. But it’s all a show, why not go? Before we look at it, we need to talk about eight antennas.


It’s an understatement to say that the RT-AX89X is a prominent router. Yes, eight external antennas dominate, but the router itself is also very large and heavy.Read the measuring tape 35 cm at the widest point.. And wisely, according to ASUS, it weighs 1.28 kg, so ASUS decided not to install a wall-mounting bracket on this router.

The LED status indicator is useful, but it can be difficult to read in some locations.

Apart from its extraordinary size and huge antenna, the other components of the router are actually quite suppressed. The router itself has a flat black tint, the ASUS logo on the top doesn’t flash, and there are no distracting and annoying RGB lights. Instead, the only light is the side LED status indicator, which isn’t really noticeable at all. The indicators also highlight one of the problems with the octagonal design of the router. In other words, if the indicator is far away from you, you will not be able to see it at all.

But even all of this cannot completely hide the fact that this router is very flashy. ROG routers are perfectly acceptable, but they wouldn’t have been able to adopt traditional shapes like rectangles and infuse them with a more elegant aesthetic.

Specifications and features

But in reality, most people don’t care or put up with the look of this router because of its pure specs and features.

Let’s look at the basics.In essence, this is Dual band 12 stream AX6000 class Wi-Fi 6 router.. Four streams are dedicated to the 2.4GHz band, providing speeds up to 1,148Mbps, and the remaining eight process the 5GHz band, providing speeds up to 4,804Mbps. It’s fast, but you need a compatible Wi-Fi 6 device to get the most out of these speeds. Fortunately, most new phones, tablets, and notebooks are already working, so you can take advantage of at least some of the speed benefits of Wi-Fi 6.

The RT-AX89X has two 10Gbps ports.

Outstanding wireless performance is just one side of the coin. The RT-AX89X router has many connection options.There is 1 Gigabit Ethernet WAN port and 2 10Gbps ports – Useful if you have one Base-T and another SFP + – 10Gbps fiber plan, or if you have a fairly high-end NAS that supports 10GbE connectivity.

There is also 8 Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports Two USB-A USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) ports for connecting devices such as NAS systems, TVs, game consoles and printers.

It may seem daunting at first, but the myriad of tabs are properly labeled and the whole system is actually very logical. Even beginners can find the option or feature they are looking for is fairly easy.

The router management interface should be familiar to long-time owners of ASUS routers.

Includes some features worth emphasizing DFS (Dynamic Frequency Selection).. This is especially useful because you can use the channels that are normally reserved for government services. DFS is not supported by many routers, which should reduce congestion on these channels and improve performance.

Another important feature of ASUS routers AiMesh.. We’ve covered this in detail here, but the point is that you can use other compatible ASUS routers to form your mesh network. This is useful if the router you are replacing is still working and supports AiMesh. This allows you to reuse the router as a mesh node instead of destroying it. This is a very wasteful task.

Those who live in an apartment will appreciate DFS support the most, as they can choose a less crowded Wi-Fi channel.

There is also a game tab that welcomes you with three options: Gear Accelerator, mobile game mode, Open NAT.. Gear Accelerator is actually a type of device-based QoS. You can prioritize connections based on device so that the most important devices perform best. Mobile game mode can only be activated on mobile devices using the ASUS Router app. It optimizes mobile device connectivity for gaming by placing the mobile device as the highest priority device in the QoS settings.[ゲーム]The last option on the tab is OpenNAT. It contains pre-configured port forwarding settings for your particular game and will help you get OpenNAT for the best connection to your game server. Titles supported by this feature include Dota 2, CS: GO, Fortnite, Minecraft, League of Legends, and PUBG.

All of this seems familiar because these features are also present in the RT-AX86U router, which we reviewed late last year. Therefore, the same warning applies. These gaming features are very useful, but they don’t match what a full-fledged ROG gaming router like the ROG GT-AX11000 can offer. The latter displays more information such as ping deviations and the ping status of popular games such as Dota 2.

Mobile apps for routers are really powerful and are not just a careless add-on to check the marketing checkboxes.

Impressively, most of the above features can be managed using the ASUS Router app on your phone or tablet.
